Proposition C will be on our ballots, and calls for the tearing down of Alcatraz. It could be replaced by a Global Peace Center. Alcatraz attracted approximately 1.4 million visitors last year, and is one of the top attractions in San Francisco. Proponents of the proposition say that a Global Peace Center would attract even more visitors. Opponents of the proposition say tearing down Alcatraz should not be a priority for San Francisco. What do think about it?

I think they should keep Alcatraz there. But I also think that a Global Peace Center is a good idea - I just think they should put it somewhere else. But I understand & appreciate the symbolism behind the idea of replacing Alcatraz.
1But I'm not in SF so my vote doesn't count.
2NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! they ABSOLUTELY cannot do this! alcatraz needs to stay there forever. what on earth is a "global peace center" anyway?? it sounds like a load of bullsh*t to me. i obviously have some strong feelings about this.
3"It could be replaced by a Global Peace Center."
Ew.
4as much as everyone wants peace,.. i highly doubt that people will visit it as an attraction. its a nice idea tho.. but Alcatraz has history!
5Leave Alcatraz. What with all the mystery & intrigue surrounding it, of course it's a tourist draw which means money for San Francisco, right? DUH...
6Alcatraz is falling apart. It is a safety hazard. Yes, people visit there but they cannot go into most areas because its a safety hazard and liability for the city and state.
Good grief, it was a freaking horrible part of history - a prison - nothing to celebrate and rejoice in. Before it was a Military prison then Federal and State Prison it was a beautiful island. It was the site of the American Indian Movement thus the graffiti on side of the island and siege of the island (which included a young Benjamin Bratt, he was 5, in the 1969). It's an aviary and sanctuary for many special seafaring animals.
I say knock it down before it collapses and kills some tourists. Put up a plaque and build a simple little visitor's center or museum holding important artifacts if there any on the island then have a small lovely public park and picnic ground. Leave the rest for nature.
Stop celebrating and holding on to the macabre. You want to save a prison how about a working one like Folsom or San Quentin. I thought San Quentin was a college or factory the first time I saw it. Reinforce that sucker please.
7Alcatraz should not be demolished as it is a historical landmark. Just because it has a negative past does not mean that it should be torn down. If we went along that mentality, Holocaust museums, underground railroad stops, the Tower of London, etc should be torn down as well. We need to learn from our past, and teach future generations. Historical landmarks help bring a tangible quality to the stories learned in history books.
I like the idea of a Global Peace Center, but don't understand why it needs to be located on an island, especially an island located in the United States. The volume of visitors to said attraction shouldn't be as important as the value, message and substance it can offer the public.
8I voted against this because this is the biggest tourist attraction in San Francisco and as annoying as they can be (no offense to any visitors
), tourists are REALLY good for our city's economy, and we shouldn't mess with it! I know
some people think that the Global Peace center will bring even more people, but I'm sort of skeptical. . .
9Proposition C was rejected by voters, so Alcatraz will be staying!
